Best alternatives to MoviePass for movie theater subscription programs.

As MoviePass continues its long, slow death spiral, you’ll probably want to know what the best alternatives to MoviePass are.  Here are the Best Alternatives to MoviePass.

Oh, my fellow Millennials. You’ve come to the right place if you need the best alternatives to MoviePass. Believe me, I feel your pain. MoviePass was an amazing moment in our lives. $9.99 per month for unlimited movies. I had even jumped on their $89.99 for one year sale. I saw so many movies both bad and good. I’d see movies I wanted to see. I’d see movies that looked just remotely interesting but would normally have waited for Netflix. But in the last month, the problems they’ve had are well, well documented. The money I invested in their stock is now completely worthless. The biggest problem of all is that I now can’t see any movies and their customer service is completely and totally non-existent.

But don’t you worry my fellow movie lovers, because I’ve got you covered with a few options to continue your moviegoing and save as much money as possible. And you know I’m all about saving money. Here are the best alternatives to MoviePass.

AMC Stubs A-List

AMC Stubs A-List is one of the best alternatives to MoviePass
If you have an AMC theater near you (they’re the largest movie theater chain in the country), you definitely want to check out AMC’s subscription program, AMC Stubs A-List. For $19.99 per month, you get 3 movies a week in any format. That means you can see 2D, 3D, Dolby Cinema and even IMAX movies.  Brilliantly, their loyalty program, AMC Stubs is also rolled into the AMC Stubs A-List movie subscription program. That means for every $1 you spend, you get 100 points. Additionally, you also get free size upgrades on popcorn and soda purchases, 10% back on food and drink purchases, free online reservations, dedicated priority lines, free large popcorn refills & a $5 gift certificate for every 5,000 points you earn. You can even reserve your seats in advance. If you live near an AMC this one is a no brainer. Sign up for AMC Stubs A-List.

Sinemia has been around for years, but hasn’t made the big media splash that MoviePass did. They’ve been quietly chugging along with a seemingly happy fanbase – and apparently a profitable business model. You can use Sinemia at most any theater and you can use their physical card or purchase movies through their app. They have a range of plans from about $5 a month for 1 movie per month to about $30 per month for 3 movies per month including 3D and IMAX films. They often run sales, so your best bet is to buy an annual plan during one of their sales. Their current sale, ending in September, drops prices from $3.99 per month to $14.99 per month.

You can purchase tickets without a card via their app (use the Facebook Movies link to wave the booking fee) and stack it with your favorite theater loyalty rewards programs. They are also unique in that they offer family plans, which none of the others have so far.  Sign up for Sinemia.

Cinemark Movie Club

Cinemark Movie Club is one of the best alternatives to MoviePass, particularly if you're not a frequent moviegoer.
Cinemark Movie Club is one of the best alternatives to MoviePass, particularly if you’re not a frequent moviegoer.

If you are a frequent movie goer, Cinemark Movie Club probably shouldn’t be your first choice.  Their subscription program is $8.99 and offers one 2D ticket per month that you can pay to upgrade to a premium format like 3D. The ticket does roll over if you don’t use it.  Each additional ticket within that month is $8.99 per ticket. You can also extend the $8.99 ticket to a friend. You can reserve seats ahead of time and the online fee is waived. Additionally, they offer 20% off of their concessions which you can also share with a friend when they’re with you. The Cinemark Movie Club stacks with their loyalty rewards program as well.

Essentially, Cinemark Movie Club is good for the casual moviegoer, not the heavy user that AMC Stubs A-List and Sinemia are going for. If you only have Cinemark theaters in your area, this might be your only choice. You can also use this while taking advantage of their discount matinees and discount Tuesday showings, but you’d have to plan carefully and be more flexible with your movie going schedule. So, it’s time to start planning on what your next move is boys and girls. There are currently three major options out there and there’s bound to be more to come. The industry now knows that we’ll go to the movies more if they make it easy and reasonable for us to do so. Hopefully the industry also knows that if they scam us and run out of money and then continuously change the program without telling customers, they’ll fail like MoviePass.
