We polled our Twitter followers and asked what they’d want someone to do if they give a gift the recipient didn’t like.

The results were astoundingly clear. 53% answered they’d want the recipient to “Pretend they love it”. 24% wanted the recipient to be brutally honest and 23% wanted the recipient to ask for a gift receipt. So, we’ve got tips for you on how to handle receiving a gift you don’t like.

It’s the season for gift giving. From Christmas parties to exchanging gifts with friends right through Christmas morning and beyond, you will most likely be receiving gifts. Sometimes, you might not particularly love a gift you’ve been given. Here’s how to handle receiving a gift you don’t like.

First, a disclaimer: Most likely, the person put time and thought into buying that particular gift for you. If nothing else, that is something you should be very thankful for. Having said that, if you insist on getting rid of the present, continue on.

Maybe you got a sweater that is perfectly good but it just is not your style. Is there someone you know who would absolutely love it? There is nothing wrong with re-gifting the item to them. That way, the gift doesn’t go to waste and it goes to someone who will really love it.

Exchange It

If you know where the gift giver got your gift from or who sells it, take it in for an exchange. Most stores allow this without a receipt if you’re getting store credit for the item. Then you are able to get something that is more your style.

If you’re unsure of where the item was purchased and you don’t know anyone who would want a fuzzy cardigan sweater with a cow on it, donate it! There are plenty of organizations who are always looking for new and gently used items including clothing, electronics, kitchen supplies and more. While you may not want that sweater, there’s someone out there in the cold who would love it.

Ask For A Gift Receipt

Our last suggestion is not for everyone. Although apparently, 24% of our readers would want their gift recipient to ask for a gift receipt if they didn’t like their gift. Do this with caution and grace and definitely at your own risk.
