You’ve seen them online and heard they can help anxiety. So what are affirmations and do they work?

You’ve probably read about affirmations in self help books or seen Tony Robbins talk about them on Twitter. Maybe you’ve even seen some on Instagram or heard they can help with anxiety. So, what are affirmations and do they really work?

What Are Affirmations?

Put simply, affirmations are thoughts that aim to affect the mind. We are constantly telling ourselves things as we think and we are constantly engaging in self talk. Often times, that self talk is negative. We tell ourselves that we’re fat or that we’ll never reach that dream. We tell ourselves that we are broke. Almost our entire waking existence is filled with self talk. That has an affect on the brain, our emotions and ultimately our life.

Imagine if you told a child he was fat and broke and would never be the scientist he wants to be. Chances are the child would grow up with a horrible self image. It is not out of the realm of possibility that the child will grow up feeling that he is actually unattractive. It seems hard to imagine telling these things to a child, right? Yet, we tell ourselves these same things all the time. We flood our mind with negative self talk. How could we possibly expect to have healthy self esteem, achieve anything we want or even make positive change in our life if we’re telling ourselves these horrible things constantly.

Affirmations are meant to change your self talk to be positive. For example, one might say to themselves, “I am so broke, I’ll never have money.” A positive affirmation to counteract that would be, “I have all the abundance I need in this moment.” The difference is huge.

The Science Behind Affirmations

Research shows that self affirmations actually improves problem solving under stress. Another study shows that affirmations help prevent and relieve depression. Additionally, positive self talk is shown to actually activate the part of the brain that helps us to feel good about ourselves.

There have been numerous studies done on positive self talk and affirmations and they all have shown a positive transformation in the people that use them.

Do Positive Affirmations Work?

So, do positive affirmations work? The science shows us that they do work. Our thoughts and believes shape our perception of ourselves , our experiences, our lives and the people in them. If you’re playing a recording in your head all day that is saying “I have the worst luck in the world”, how do you think you’re going to interpret the events of that day?

The key to positive affirmations working is to actually use them and use them regularly. Instead of that recording repeating “I have the worst luck in the world” all day in your head, imagine the day you might have if that recording stated “Today is going to be a great day!”. Over time, you will begin to believe it.

Positive affirmations can be life changing. Focusing on what you do want in life, rather than what you don’t have can have powerful results for you. It is a small but extremely powerful difference that will change your life.
