Leading coronavirus expert Dr. Ben Neuman busts COVID-19 myths, fact checks fake documentaries and talks scientific misinformation more in this interview with Kyle Mcmahon.
With the wave of misinformation, fake news and down right false things going around about COVID-19, I really wanted to talk with someone who knew what they were talking about regarding coronaviruses. Dr. Ben Neuman is just that COVID-19 myth buster.
This all started a month or so ago, when there was a video posing as a “documentary” gaining steam online (it won’t be named here) that featured a former scientist that was arrested for stealing and then fired from her job and has been unable to work in the field since. That video was being posted and shared by many people, from your Grandmom to your usual gaggle of conspiracy theorists. It was a slick video with dramatic music. “Take me seriously”, the video demanded. Unfortunately, the information in the video couldn’t be taken seriously at all. Nearly all of what was presented in the video was false. This is exactly why I wrote on how misinformation is a virus just as deadly as COVID-19.
Facts always matter
As I watched people whom I consider to be reasonably intelligent sharing this video without looking in to what it was actually saying, I feared what that misinformation could do when we’re talking about a highly contagious and deadly virus. That lack of basic fact checking could literally kill people. So I knew I wanted to make it as easy as possible for people to get actual facts from an actual coronavirus expert.
I had seen a video online of Dr. Ben Neuman talking about COVID-19 and what he was saying was easy for anyone at all to understand, no matter what your medical or scientific background. As I did my own research on his background, I found that he is one of the world’s leading coronavirus researchers. Chairman of the Biology Department at Texas A&M University, he is also on the team that named the COVID-19 coronavirus.
Who better could I talk to than a man who has been studying coronaviruses for decades? I contacted Dr. Neuman myself and gave a brief synopsis of what I would like to do: Bust COVID-19 myths. Dr. Neuman agreed and away we went.
