DAY 10 CHALLENGE:       Do A Digital Detox

How To Meet Todays Goal:

Just for today, aim to do a bit of a digital detox. Instead of endlessly scrolling through your Facebook feed or Pinterest account, set a certain amount of time that you will allow yourself to be on your social media channels and then log off of them for the day.

Go into your phones settings and review your notification settings to determine which apps you want to receive notifications from and which ones you don’t need to receive. (Apple iPhone instructions / Android instructions). Do you really need to be dinged every time that stock you purchased in college goes up or down? Do you really need a notification for todays specials from that burger joint?

Set up the Do Not Disturb function on your phone and figure out a set time to use it. You can set it up to allow certain people’s calls and texts to come through while silencing every one else. (Apple iPhone instructions / Android instructions). Turn it on during your relaxation time and turn it back off when you’re done. Any emergency calls will still come through, but you won’t be bothered by everything else.

How It Helps Anxiety:

The average person spends an hour and 40 minutes a day on social media. That’s nearly 12 hours a week on social media alone. From work e-mails, to credit card statements to texts from McDonald’s, many of us are being constantly bombarded by potential stress triggers. Even if the notifications are something we want to know, it has us glued to our devices. This contributes to putting us in a heightened state, constantly checking very ding on our phones, tablets, watches, computers and laptops.

By cutting down on this – just a little bit – we are giving our minds a rest from the constant stimuli of our digital lives.

Wrap-Up:

By simply cutting out a little bit of your online time, making sure you’re only getting the notifications you want to get and learning how your Do Not Disturb feature works, you are giving your brain – and your anxiety – a break.
