DAY 15 CHALLENGE: Do Something Nice For Someone
How To Meet Todays Goal:
Today, do something totally unexpected for someone else – essentially, a random act of kindness. It can be for someone you know or a total stranger. It can be something free or something purchased. The choice is totally yours.
How It Helps Anxiety:
With anxiety we often get so caught up in our own head. By helping out someone else, you are taking a step out of your brain and focusing on bringing kindness to another person. Studies show that performing compassionate acts for others actually improves symptoms of anxiety and depression.
As anxious people we are often quite cruel to ourselves. By helping other people, we are reinforcing the steps needed to be compassionate which ultimately teaches us how to be more compassionate to ourselves. Helping others makes those people feel good, which helps to build self esteem. Doing a kind act also helps build relationships, which has numerous benefits for those of us with anxiety and panic.
Wrap-Up:
At the end of the day, we as anxiety sufferers need to practice more self compassion. We need to un-learn the nasty and harmful habit of constantly judging ourselves. Through showing compassion to others, we mute – at least temporarily – the voice in our heads that can constantly judge us because the focus is no longer on us.
